Overview

Delegates will leave the course with a clear understanding of what commercial thinking (in a local government context) is and why it’s important.  In addition, delegates will learn a number new skills, tools and models to ensure their future commercial proposals are robust and entrepreneurial.  Finally, delegates will be introduced to the concept of balancing financial cost vs need or desirability.

This course will use local government examples and case studies to explain what commercial thinking is and why it matters.  The course will then cover in detail:

  • The commercial thinking wheel
  • PESTLE
  • Business model canvas
  • Strategic choice cascade
  • Porters 5 forces
  • Rugby Borough Council’s 8 stage commercial process
  • Basic introduction to cost vs need analysis

 

This course will enable you to

  • Understand what commercial thinking is (in a local government context).
  • Understand why commercial thinking matters.
  • Learn about tools and models to help you think commercially.
  • Understand what questions should be asked before making commercial decisions.
  • Understand about return on investment (ROI) and opportunity cost.
  • Balancing financial cost vs need or desirability (including a brief introduction to cost benefit analysis).
